The recent two months i am in turn working in intensive care unit (ICU),and have seen a lot of sad scenes. The patient in bed 4 is a male, who was inhospitalised emergently for being anuria after drunkenness.
In hospital he got worse and worse. Renal function impairment, acute damage to pancrease, respiratory failure, ARDS,pulmonary infection, etc, all these formidable things turned out one by one. Then high-ranking broad-spectrum antibiotics, breathing machine, persistent blood filter, blood transfusion, nutrition support, immunology support, were all applied to him. All these things are very very expensive. His everyday's cost was about 10 thousand. Sometime, it was even higher.
20days after, the patient was still exhausted, Everyday, there was a lot of laboratory examinations for him. Each time when i drew blood from his vein or artery,on seeing his arm covered with countless pinprick marks, i sighed in my heart.
After about 20 days' treatment, today his wife, a village woman came and told the doctors, the family have spent about 260 thousands on the patient, and now she is debt-ridden. She had their house in mortgage, now she has no money at all.
She told the doctors to quit all treatment. And she said she want to have his husband back home. After a long discussion, she signed "stopping treatment agreement"
Then all treatments were stopped except for the breathing machine for ventilation, and electrocardio-monitor, to sustain and manifest his last life.
Then the wife walked to be bedside of the husband, bent her body to his face, and asked "i will take u home one hour later, do u have anything to tell me?" . The poor illness husband, who still be conscious at the moment, shaked his head again and again. At that moment, i saw big drops of sweat exuding from his forhead. He was conscious, and he knew what was coming.
Then the wife tured round and walked out of the ward calmly. The whole process, i had my eyes on her face, i found there was not even a grasp from her on her husband's hand, and there was not even a drop of tears on her face. She was calm and numb.
At that moment, the feeling in her heart maybe "relieved", i thought.
I felt depressed the whole afternoon. Life is so fragile, and so is people's emotion, when they are put in front of disease and economy embarrassment.
So all we can do is be take care of ourself and value our life. When misfortune comes, anything will be pale and weak.
I still remember each time i drew blood from his veins, his grasped my hand tightly, i can feel the warm from his body. What he want to transfer to me may be the hope to live and the need of help.
But i am weakness too, i can't help him.
